When can you retire?
At level 4, and every time you level up past level 4, you can choose to retire your character to safety.
What retirement means
- Your character finds a relatively safe niche in the world of Planet Karus
- They won’t affect major plots anymore, but major plots won’t specifically target them
- General disasters may still affect them, but they’re safe from most adventuring perils
- You create a new character for future adventures
Retirement paths
Choose one based on your class:
- Fighter – Establish a stronghold – Set up a fortified compound or become a local leader/warlord.
- Magic-user – Become a sage – Study ancient lore, magic, and alien technology in relative safety.
- Thief – Go into business – Open a shop, information network, or other profitable enterprise.
Legacy benefits
Your next character gains:
- XP bonus based on retirement level (does not stack with XP modifier from primary ability—take whichever is higher)
- A contact – your retired character can provide occasional assistance
Retirement level rewards
Level 4: 5% XP bonus for your next character
Level 5: 10% XP bonus for your next character
Level 6: 10% XP bonus for your next character + permanent +1 bonus to one saving throw of your choice
Retired character availability
Once per month, roll 1d6. On a 5+, your retired character is available to provide minor assistance (information, supplies, introductions) if the active party seeks them out.
